During Wednesday evening, April 5, the floor of Fellowship Hall in Whitelick Presbyterian Church will be transformed into a labyrinth, on which you are invited to experience a spiritual journey walking a ''prayer path.'' Labyrinths are very old dating back to 4000 B.C. and have many meanings. In Christian tradition, walking a labyrinth is associated with a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. During the Middle Ages, it was much safer to walk a labyrinth in a church or church courtyard than to endure the dangers of the long journey across Europe and through the Middle East to Jerusalem. One of the most famous labyrinths is the 11-circuit design in the floor of the Chartres Cathedral near Paris, France. Unlike a maze that has several entry points and paths that may lead to dead ends, a labyrinth has only one entrance. Walkers follow a circular path to the center and back out. Today's ''pilgrims'' walk the labyrinth as a way to enhance prayer, contemplation, meditation, and/or personal spiritual growth. In our world of constant activity and busy lifestyles, a labyrinth walk offers the opportunity to stop, clear our minds, and draw closer to God. ''Be still and know that I am God,'' says the poet in Psalms. These walks can be taken at 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m., preceding or following the Lenten Taizé Prayer and Song Service in the sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. Families with school-age children are encouraged to come at 6:00 for a brief orientation before the walk. A parental guide, to read and discuss prior to the walk, can be obtained in advance from the church. See contact information below. Since this labyrinth experience will be indoors, participants will be asked to remove their shoes and walk in socks or soft-soled slippers. Facilitators will be available to aid first-time walkers.
